A Year in the Landscape: What to Do and When

Saturday, January 30, 2021

Learn about timely tips for caring for your landscape during this on-line class packed with useful information.

As mentioned in one of our FB tips ~ here's some information about pruning shrubs

Most flowering shrubs are pruned after they bloom, but sometimes it’s best to take out older branches in early spring that are shading younger, more vigorous growth, as is often the case with taller lilacs, dogwoods and viburnams.

Other slow to wake shrubs like hydrangea which is usually grown in the shade and warmth loving Blue Mist spirea should be cut back to 8 to 12 inches above ground in late April or early May, respectively.

Rejuvenation pruning is often the best option for otherwise healthy shrubs that need a total fresh start due to a lot of interior dead wood.

If you have questions, feel free to call 970-493-5681 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Also, we provide hands-on instruction to teach you how to prune your own shrubs for optimal blooming and health.  Or we can certainly tackle the job for you if preferred.

Pruning Services for Shrubs, Fruit and Small Ornamental Trees

"Robyn and Matt cleaned up our unwieldy shrubs; pruned our delicate, old apple tree; and removed the trimmings. They worked quickly yet carefully; they were friendly, professional and reasonably priced. We highly recommend their services and will call them again."  Maria

"The crab looks so good, Hubby said you are truly an artist!"  Mila

Wild Iris Living offers pruning services to help clients keep their woody plants healthy and beautiful.  Shrubs are generally pruned while dormant in spring, with minor pruning work done throughout the growing season.

Fruit and small ornamnetal trees are best pruned February through March based on their species.  This allows us to see the framework of the trees and make sure the result is a tree that looks as aesthetically pleasing in winter as it does while in leaf.

Or if you feel you are no longer able to maintain your plantings and need to consider simplifying or adapting the lanscape to your current abilities, call us to re-vision your landscape.  It may be that you need to bring fragrance, color and wildlife a bit closer in to the areas you can more easily access.

"If you are in town walk by our garden sometime, everything is in bloom and looks beautiful.  Your design is awesome!  Thanks!" Nancy

"Robyn was fantastic to work with. She listened to what I wanted and then designed a plan to match. I was very pleased with the design on paper, but since I have recently had it installed I am totally thrilled with the results. All I want to do is sit in my garden and enjoy it!  Robin
